As schoolchildren, most of us grew up saying the words of the Pledge of Allegiance, with its familiar phrase, “One nation under God…” But what does that truly mean? In what sense are we, as American citizens, subject to or subservient to God? And what is the particular role that people of the Christian faith are called to play in the life of our nation?
